I
was born in 1895 in Hanau. I began studying music in my twelfth
year. As a violinist, violist, pianist and percussionist I have
thoroughly cultivated the following musical fields: chamber music
of all kinds, cinema music, coffee house music, dance music, operetta,
jazz band, and military music. Since 1916 I have been concert master
at the Frankfurt Opera.

in Naumburg an der Queis.

Beginning of regular music instruction.

Violin lessons with Anna Hegner.
1908
Anna Hegner leaves Frankfurt and arranges for Hindemith to study first
privately with Adolf Rebner and then from the winter semester onwards
to continue with Rebner on a scholarship at Dr Hoch's Conservatory in
Frankfurt.

In the autumn
Hindemith is awarded a prize of 750 marks from the Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
Foundation for his string quartet.

Hindemith is assigned to play military music with the "Resident Infantry Regiment 222"
and sets out for Tagolsheim (Alsace) on 16 January. On 5 December he is
discharged from playing military music.

Hindemith turns to the director of Schott Publishers in Mainz, Privy Councillor
Ludwig Strecker, with the request to publish several of his works. Hindemith's
lifelong collaboration with Schott Publishers begins with this letter.

on 12 March conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler in Berlin.
Furtwängler's article "The Hindemith Case", written in
agreement with Hindemith, appears in several German daily newspapers on
25 November.
On 28 November the article Warum Vorschusslorbeeren für den Konjunktur-Musiker
Hindemith? Musik ohne Resonanz im Volk appears in Angriff.

Wilhelm Furtwängler resigns all his posts on 4 December and leaves
Berlin for several months.
On 6 December Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels denounces Hindemith
as an "atonal noisemaker" during his speech at the Berlin Sport
Palace.
